Raise the lower guard with the Retracting Handle and make sure it moves freely and does not touch the blade or any other part, in all angles and depths of cut.

Check the operation and condition of the lower guard spring. If the guard and the spring are not operating properly, they must be serviced before use. Lower guard may operate sluggishly due to damaged parts, gummy deposits, or a buildup of debris. As soon as blade enters the material, lower guard must be released. For all other sawing, the lower guard should operate automatically. Always observe that the lower guard is covering the blade before placing saw down on bench or floor.

An unprotected, coasting blade will cause the saw to walk backwards, cutting whatever is in its path. Be aware of the time it takes for the blade to stop after switch is released. It is important to support the work properly to minimize body exposure, blade binding, or loss of control. Hold tool by insulated gripping surfaces when performing an operation where the cutting tools may contact hidden wiring or its own cord. When ripping always use a rip fence or straight edge guide.

This improves the accuracy of cut and reduces the chance for blade binding. Always use blades with correct size and shape diamond vs. Blades that do not match the mounting hardware of the saw will run eccentrically, causing loss of control.

Never use damaged or incorrect blade washers or bolts. The blade washers and bolt were specially designed for your saw, for optimum performance and safety of operation. Causes and Operator Prevention of Kickback:. Kickback is a sudden reaction to a pinched, bound, or misaligned saw blade, causing an uncontrolled saw to lift up and out of the workpiece toward the operator. When the blade is pinched or bound tightly by the kerf closing down, the blade stalls and the motor reaction drives the unit rapidly back toward the operator.

If the blade becomes twisted or misaligned in the cut, the teeth at the back edge of the blade can dig into the top surface of the wood causing the blade to climb out of the kerf and jump back toward the operator. When blade is binding, or when interrupting a cut for any reason, release the trigger and hold the saw motionless in the material until the blade comes to a complete stop.

Investigate and take corrective actions to eliminate the cause of blade binding. When restarting a saw in the workpiece, center the saw blade in the kerf and check that teeth are not engaged into the material. Large panels tend to sag under their own weight. Supports must be placed under the panel on both sides, near the line of cut and near the edge of the panel. Do not use dull or damaged blade. Blade depth and bevel adjusting locking levers must be tight and secure before making cut. Some wood contains preservatives which can be toxic.

Take extra care to prevent inhalation and skin contact when working with these materials. Request, and follow, all safety information available from your material supplier. Many Porter-Cable tools will operate on either D.

Several models, however, are designed for A. Refer to the specification plate on your tool for proper voltage and current rating. Do not operate tools rated A.

To do so may seriously damage the tool. If an extension cord is used, make sure the conductor size is large enough to prevent excessive voltage drop which will cause loss of power and possible motor damage.

A table of recommended extension cord sizes will be found below. If an extension cord is to be used outdoors it must be marked with the suffix W-A or W following the cord type designation. Page 6: Replacement Parts When servicing use only identical replacement parts. Several models, however, are designed for A. A fine tooth blade is recom- mended for cutting plywood. Turn saw upside down, retract telescoping guard and check squareness of blade as shown in Fig.

If adjustment is necessary loosen bevel adjustment locking lever and turn stop screw until angle is correct. Page 11 Adjust saw for depth of cut so that slot in insert straddles saw blade at least ".

Align insert so the saw blade is centered in the slot and tighten knob securely. Page 12 Fig. Clamp work on a rigid support such as a bench or saw horses. See Fig. Mark the line of cut on the work. Be sure cut-off line is beyond end of support to the left only enough to allow proper operation of the telescoping guard.

Page Bevel Cutting Do not force the cut. Let the saw do the cutting at the rate of speed permitted by the type of cut and the material being cut. When the cut is completed, release the switch and allow the blade to stop before lifting the saw from the work. Page 14 Mark the area clearly with lines on all sides. Start near the corner of one side and place front edge of saw base firmly on the work.
